You Can’t Hide the Truth
That is a blessing and a curse. Body language allows you to see the feelings that other people are hiding, but it also means that you can’t hide.
Your thinking shows up on your body.
The way you think affects what your body does. That is why we can “read” people. We can tell if a person is nervous by how quickly they are breathing, how they are standing, what their hands and feet are doing, and what facial expressions they are making. Their body language gives them away.
This is why it is so important to be in control of your thinking. If you try to use body language that is out of line with your thinking, your body will give you away. In the words of Shakira, “hips don’t lie”. Learning to manage your thinking will have a positive effect on the nonverbal messages you send.
Alone, changing your thoughts is powerful. Clients who manage their brains and choose thoughts that give them confidence benefit tremendously.
But it’s only half the formula…
The body affects the brain as well. Perhaps you’ve noticed that smiling actually has the power to make you feel happier. What we do with our body changes how we feel.
We can use this to our advantage. I teach my clients lots of ways to use their bodies to get into the mental state they want.
Changing your thinking without changing your body language can lead you to send nonverbal signals you didn’t intend. And changing your body language is an easy process for many people. You get a lot of “bang for the buck” by improving your body language.
However, the combination of these things is far more powerful than either of them on their own.
Let me play this out with an example. When I first started my business, I was terrified most of the time. Before my early speaking engagements I would use the tools I knew about the body language to give myself the courage to walk on stage. These tools did not require me to feel confident, just to use confident body language. These are powerful tools and I still use them all the time.
Then I learned the brain managing / thinking tools. Now, I know how to get my brain to actually believe confident thoughts. Alone, those confident thoughts improve the actions I take in my business.
But it was when I put together confident thoughts and confident body language that my business really took off.
The first month that I really understood both I doubled my client list. And the next month I was able to start charging my full rate for speaking engagements. Things just keep getting better and better as I use both of these tools.
Its like adding mentos to a coke. The coke will quench your thirst on a hot day, and mentos are candy. Who can argue with candy? But the show starts when you put them together. Click here to schedule a free mini session and we’ll get your show started.
